The San Francisco Arts Education Project
We Shall Be Free, We Shall Find Peace
Opening Reception | August 20, 2022 | 3–6 pm
An exhibit of art by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated artists from San Quentin State Prison.
This exhibit invites the viewer to connect with the silent voices and expressions of an often unseen and forgotten community and to highlight the importance of providing arts education to the most marginalized and ignored citizens in our society.
The exhibit is presented by SFArtsED in partnership with the William James Association and the San Francisco Opera department of Diversity, Equity & Community. The William James Association is a Bay Area non-profit organization whose mission is to promote work service in the arts, environment, education and community development. The San Francisco Opera partnered for this original project in support of its Fall 2021 production of Beethoven’s 1805 opera staged in a contemporary prison, asking the artists to find inspiration in the themes from the opera such as freedom, injustice and loyal love.
