Artist Reception: March 4th | 6-8pm
Themes + Projects gallery presents “Passages” by Tom Sandonato. Sandonato’s work explores the space between painting and sculpture. His mixed media pieces are painted on a variety of materials from simple cardboard, Masonite, plexi-glass, to hot rolled steel. Consistent in his work, is the desire to see beyond the two dimensionality of the painted surface to the nuances of what lies within. His methods include scratching and sanding through various layers of pigment, all within the confines of the grid. Pieces in the exhibition range in scale from 36”X 24” to 96” X 96.”
Tom Sandonato, also known as the co-creator of kitHAUS, an ecofriendly pre-fabricated modular building unit, is a designer, builder, and artist living and working in Los Angeles. Born in New Jersey, Tom attended Ramapo College where he studied painting with Johanna Poussette Dart, McCarther Binion and sculpture with Jay Wholley.
In the spirit of philanthropy, Themes+Projects will donate 1% of art sales made in 2017 to San Francisco non profit, Lave Mae. Lava Mae launched its mobile hygiene service in June 2014 and has since provided 14,000+ showers to 2,400 people moving through homelessness, inspired replication of our hygiene services, and dramatically raised awareness about the lack of access to showers and basic hygiene across the U.S. and around the globe.
