New Documents is pleased to present new work by artists Ruth van Beek and Nicholas Gottlund as part of Et al. etc.'s ongoing guest curatorial series.
Ruth van Beek is a Dutch artist and bookmaker based in Koog aan de Zaan. Her work uses a growing archive of found photographic source material taken from vintage books and magazines. Activated through contextual and physical refiguration, her work transforms these clippings from silent paper objects to vivid biomorphic actors. Her work has been presented in several solo and group exhibitions in Amsterdam, Berlin, New York, and Beijing, and published online and in print in Time, Capricious, Foam Magazine, Rodeo, It's Nice That, and the British Journal of Photography. Her new book, The Cast,is forthcoming from New Documents in early 2017.
Nicholas Gottlund is an American artist, bookmaker, and publisher currently living and working in Los Angeles. Between 2006 and 2016 he ran Gottlund Verlag, an imprint run out of a studio space just outside Kutztown, Pennsylvania that produced artist books and multiples by hand. Gottlund's work addresses the particularities of various print processes, investigating an (often physical) interaction between the printed page and its vernacular object-referent. He has participated in group exhibitions at Kunsthal Charlottenbourg, Copenhangen; Signal, Brooklyn; Human Resources, Los Angeles; and OFG, Dallas and has had solo exhibitions at Melk, Oslo; Karma, New York; and Bodega, Philadelphia.
New Documents is a Los Angeles and Vancouver-based art book publishing house founded in 2012 by Jeff Khonsary.
