Natalya Burd: travel diaries

Jack Fischer Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of Natalya Burd’s solo show, travel diaries. This will be Burd’s third show at our gallery.

Natalya Burd is an inveterate traveler of the land, and these pieces, along with all of her work, are an homage to and a travelogue of our natural world. Burd trains her eyes, and ours, on the trees, the foliage, the dirt, and the water. She takes us on a virtual tour from the macro to the micro, giving us a visually rich overview of the vistas and landscapes she has encountered. The work is lush and clearly influenced by the cinematography and depiction of light and landscape as seen in the work of Akira Kurosawa and Andrei Tarkovsky.  Most notably is perhaps the work of James Turrell and as Burd puts it: "His ability to engage the viewer and immerse them inside the color field as it changes with time.”

Burd writes: “By using intense color saturation and playing with the reflective quality of the colored plexiglass and the mirror, I push the boundaries of flat surfaces, creating a shimmering atmosphere that evokes the gleams of passing moments in time. In my work, I depicted the relationship between past and present.

“Working with Plexiglas material at a large scale gives me the opportunity to play with illusion and perspective to recreate the experience of being inside of nature and prompts viewers to take time to reflect on their lives and appreciate the natural world around them.”

Natalya’s work takes us beyond seeing life through rose-colored lenses and instead we are privy to her multi-colored lenses.
