Leila Weefur: PLAY†PREY: A Gospel
Opening Artist Reception | October 16, 2021 | 4 – 6 pm PST
Minnesota Street Project Foundation is honored to announce the opening of California Black Voices Project grantee Leila Weefur’s PLAY†PREY: A Gospel. The multi-channel film experience will be presented on the main floor at Minnesota Street Project in Gallery 106 and on Adjacent, the Project’s virtual space for art.
PLAY†PREY: A Gospel recounts a relationship between God, the Church, and a queer Black child. The spiritual narrative takes inspiration from four of the lyrical sermons in James Weldon Johnson’s God’s Trombone: Seven Negro Sermons in Verse.
Showcased as three separate films playing simultaneously, Weefur’s installation contemplates the structures and rules imposed on pleasure, play, and sexuality under Black Christianity. The film features an original soundtrack in collaboration with KYN (Josh Casey & Yari Bundy) and Vocals from Sandra Lawson-Ndu.
