SFDanceworks (SFDW) presents world-class choreographic voices of the past, present, and future of contemporary dance. As part of SFDW the Works Backstage Series, we present Cheekbones & Pride, an open rehearsal of Martha Graham's Deep Song with Regissuer Miki Orihara and SFDW dancers. The event will explore the staging process of setting this historic Martha Graham work from 1937.
SFDW's Works Backstage Series offers a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creative process through open rehearsals and Q&A’s with our season’s choreographers and dancers.
Miki Orihara is best known for her work as a principal dancer in the Martha Graham Dance Company, which she joined in 1987. In addition to performing the Graham repertory, Miki has worked closely with the renowned Japanese-American dancer, choreographer and director, Yuriko, preserving her unique approach to Graham Technique. As a Regissuer of Martha Graham’s work, she has been setting works worldwide.
"Deep Song was created at the beginning of the war in Spain," says Graham. "The forms of the dance—its swirls, crawls on the floor, contractions and falls—are kinetic equivalents of the human experience in war which inspired Deep Song. It is the anatomy of anguish from tragic events."
This event is made possible by generous support from Minnesota Street Project.
